I'm not going to give you any of the hippie stuff you usually see about barefoot running. That's not what this is about. The question being asked here is how we can run the fastest and make the greatest long term improvements to our running speed?
In this case these 2 sprints were run in the exact same place, on the exact same day, under the exact same conditions and they were done roughly 5 minutes apart. First I did the rep with cleats, then I took the cleats off and ran the same exact sprint barefoot. As we can plainly see, the barefoot sprint was significantly faster, by about 2 tenths of a second.
Now, obviously you need cleats if you are playing a sport on grass or turf. You cannot move sharply or cut with any force or agility whatsoever if you don't have studs on your forefoot to dig into the earth. And if you try to you'll just slip and fall.
But during linear training sprints you may find that you can run significantly faster barefoot than even while wearing lightweight cleats (I am wearing Adidas Adizero cleats here, one of the lightest cleats you can buy). My theory for why this is has to do with knee lift and leg turnover.
I can actually feel the difference in terms of knee lift height and how rapidly I am able to turn my legs over through a full stride. The cleats don't weigh much, but they weigh enough to where I can perceive this difference internally. It may be small, but it is noticeable.
Even small enhancements in knee lift (which can organically improve stride length) and rapidity of turnover can add up to big improvements in running speed over the course of a full sprint rep.
The more often you can run fast the faster you will be able to run. If you want to push the ceiling to new heights you have to knock on it as often as possible. Higher top speeds achieved more frequently creates a higher ceiling that can be tapped into more often.
So if you have a good, clean running surface and you find that you can move quicker without shoes, it may be a good idea to train your linear sprints barefoot when feasible!
