I was delighted to be able to
observe at close range, how this Slaty-breasted Rail forage and what it ate.
Stabbing its long sharp bill methodically into the ground as it scoured the earth by the sides of the dirt path, it succeeded in pulling out a veritable feast of earthworms and other invertebrates.
But it was never too engrossed in foraging, scooting back into the safety of the undergrowth lining the path at the slightest noise or movement. It would re-emerge furtively to continue forage soon after when it sensed that the course was clear.
The Slaty-breasted Rail is an uncommon resident in Singapore. It is shy & skittish by nature.
