I apologize for the wind making the ambience hard to hear at points, but we were set up on a hill (SD-10 is on a hill as this region is full of foothills) and there wasn't anything to block the wind with.
Early on you can hear several Vortexes of various ages doing their 1 minute alert cycle; I believe the City of Chillicothe sirens do 3 minutes while the county Whelens only go for one, as the Vortex in Chillicothe I placed my audio recorder at ran a 3 minute alert cycle. However, it’s possible certain city units ignore cancel tones or something. You can hear a very distant 465 Hz Vortex start up for another three minutes following the other sirens. It’s very faint as it is several miles away (louder in person but the wind drowned the sound out) so you’ll have to turn your volume all the way up to hear it.
This is one of two SD-10's Ross County saved from the old Chillicothe CD system; this SD-10 is located at the Ross County Fairgrounds, while the other is in Chillicothe. This SD-10 was put back up in 2018 (after being "restored" following a lightning strike in 2017, which required the motor to be rewound). Unfortunately, today it decided to not work. I am not sure if it ever works due to the installation job not being the best. The antenna is directly beneath the siren so probably interference or something is causing the issue. I had a feeling this was gonna fail and in hindsight should've done a Whelen, but oh well, something I'll do next time. Oh, and yes, the intake is mounted over the top of the pole, so this thing probably sounds really quiet when it actually works. This siren was reported as non-functional to the Ross County Sheriff's Office following the test. No, I doubt anything will be done about it, but you never know.
Several Whelen Vortexes from Chillicothe as well as from the surrounding jurisdictions can be heard during the test. Enjoy the foothills in the background, the fog and the hills added a nice aesthetic to the video. Enjoy!
Ross County tests their sirens (the ones that actually work, that is) on the First Day of the month at noon, from March through November.
