Italian is a Romance language from the Indo-European family that evolved from Vulgar Latin. It's the least divergent Romance language from Latin, along with Sardinian. Italian is an official language in Italy, San Marino, Vatican City, and parts of Switzerland. It has official minority status in Croatia and parts of Slovenia. The standard Italian language originated from 12th-century Tuscan literature, and its modern form was shaped by more recent developments, though its core grammar and lexicon remain similar to those used in 13th-century Florence.
Friulian is a Romance language in the Rhaeto-Romance family, spoken by around 600,000 people in the Friuli region of northeastern Italy. Although it shares roots with Ladin, Friulian has evolved separately under the influence of German, Italian, Venetian, and Slovene. The language has a documented history dating back to the 11th century, with literary works appearing as early as 1300. There was a resurgence of interest in Friulian in the 20th century.
