Spanish, a Romance language from the Indo-European family, originated from Vulgar Latin on the Iberian Peninsula. It has about 500 million native speakers, primarily in the Americas and Spain, and 600 million including second-language speakers. Spanish is the official language of 20 countries and one of the six official UN languages. It is the second-most spoken native language globally, after Mandarin, and the most widely spoken Romance language, with Mexico having the largest number of native speakers.

Occitan is a Romance language spoken in Southern France, Monaco, Italy’s Occitan Valleys, and Spain's Val d'Aran in Catalonia, often collectively called Occitania. Some consider Catalan a part of Occitan due to its close relationship with certain dialects like Gascon, though Catalan was only considered a dialect of Occitan until the 19th century. Occitan lacks a standardized written form and official status in France, where most speakers reside. Its dialects vary significantly, and the language is rapidly declining. UNESCO considers most dialects severely endangered, with only Gascon and Vivaro-Alpine being definitely endangered.
