Italian is a Romance language from the Indo-European family that evolved from Vulgar Latin. It's the least divergent Romance language from Latin, along with Sardinian. Italian is an official language in Italy, San Marino, Vatican City, and parts of Switzerland. It has official minority status in Croatia and parts of Slovenia. The standard Italian language originated from 12th-century Tuscan literature, and its modern form was shaped by more recent developments, though its core grammar and lexicon remain similar to those used in 13th-century Florence.
Venetian is a Romance language primarily spoken in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy, where most of the five million residents can understand it. It is also understood and sometimes spoken in nearby regions and countries, including Trentino, Friuli, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, and by the Venetian diaspora in countries like Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Although often called an "Italian dialect," Venetian is a distinct language with several local varieties. Its exact classification within the Romance language family is debated.
