French is a Romance language that evolved from the Vulgar Latin spoken in the Roman Empire, specifically from Gallo-Romance in Northern Gaul. It is closely related to other langues d'oïl spoken in northern France and southern Belgium. French has become an official language in 27 countries and is widely spoken across about 50 countries and territories.
Picard is a Romance language spoken in northern France and parts of Belgium, particularly in the Hauts-de-France region and Wallonia. It is known as Picard in Picardy, Ch'ti, or Ch'timi in Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Picard speakers, around 700,000, are mostly elderly, and its use has declined significantly. UNESCO initially declared it a "severely endangered language," but as of 2023, Picard is classified as "vulnerable."
