Somali is an Afroasiatic language in the Cushitic branch, spoken by Somalis in Greater Somalia and the Somali diaspora. It is an official language in Somalia and Ethiopia, and a national language in Djibouti and northeastern Kenya. Somali is the best-documented Cushitic language, with studies dating back to the late 19th century. There are about 24 million Somali speakers, with around 17 million in Somalia, where it is spoken by 95% of the population.
Amharic is an Ethiopian Semitic language spoken by the Amharas and used as a lingua franca in major Ethiopian cities. It is the official working language of the Ethiopian federal government and several federal regions. As of 2020, it has over 60 million speakers, making it the most widely spoken language in Ethiopia and the second most spoken mother tongue after Oromo. Globally, it is the second most widely spoken Semitic language after Arabic. Amharic is written left-to-right using a script derived from Geʽez.
