ILoveLanguages! | AUSTRONESIAN: YAPESE, CHUUKESE, & POHNPEIAN @ilovelanguages0124 | Uploaded September 2024 | Updated October 2024, 1 day ago.
Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together.
Yapese is an Austronesian language in the Oceanic branch, spoken on the island of Yap (Wa'ab) in the Federated States of Micronesia. While its classification is challenging, it may belong to the Admiralty Islands languages. Yapese is spoken specifically on the Yap Main Islands and excludes the Chuukic languages spoken on the neighboring islands, such as Ulithian, Woleaian, Satawalese, and, to some extent, Nguluwan.
Chuukese is a Chuukic language of the Austronesian family, spoken mainly on the islands of Chuuk in the Caroline Islands, Micronesia, with communities of speakers on Pohnpei and Guam. There are approximately 51,000 speakers in Micronesia. Chuukese belongs to the Micronesian subbranch of Austronesian languages and is part of the Chuukic subgroup, closely related to languages like Woleaian and Carolinian.
Pohnpeian is a Micronesian language spoken on the island of Pohnpei in the Caroline Islands. It has about 30,000 native speakers on Pohnpei and its surrounding areas, with an additional 10,000-15,000 speakers living off-island in the US mainland, Hawaii, and Guam. It is the second-most widely spoken native language in the Federated States of Micronesia, after Chuukese.
This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. It aims to provide valuable insights and knowledge to viewers, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different languages and their unique characteristics. By raising awareness about linguistic diversity, the video seeks to foster a greater respect and recognition for various languages, particularly those that are endangered or underrepresented.
