Italian is a Romance language from the Indo-European family that evolved from Vulgar Latin. It's the least divergent Romance language from Latin, along with Sardinian. Italian is an official language in Italy, San Marino, Vatican City, and parts of Switzerland. It has official minority status in Croatia and parts of Slovenia. The standard Italian language originated from 12th-century Tuscan literature, and its modern form was shaped by more recent developments, though its core grammar and lexicon remain similar to those used in 13th-century Florence.
Ladin is a Romance language from the Rhaeto-Romance subgroup, primarily spoken in Northern Italy's Dolomite Mountains by the Ladin people. It shares similarities with Romansh (in Switzerland) and Friulian (in northeastern Italy). The exact boundaries of the Ladin-speaking area are debated, with some defining it narrowly around the Sella group valleys, while others include neighboring valleys in Belluno and northwestern Trentino. A standard version of Ladin, called Ladin Dolomitan, has been developed for use across the entire Ladin-speaking region.
