"Incapable" by Róisín Murphy

Curated by: Mike Floeck

Spotify: bit.ly/IncapableRoisinMurphy

Genre: #nudisco

Róisín Murphy, queen of the night and temptress of the dance floor, is back with a disgustingly good new single. Clocking in at a luscious eight minutes and twenty-six seconds, “Incapable” is incapable of failure as an earworm, burrowing into the brain and infecting the attention span. Get ready to tap your damn foot as a R-A-D electric bass glides in over a drum machine and handclap that build to a workout, Murphy pondering on love as she simultaneously ponders and doubts her own capabilities as a woman and as a lover.

In what can feel at times like a space epic set in a distant galaxy, Murphy darts in on laser beams with hardened-yet-delicate vocals adding depth to the trauma she sings of, the feeling of failing at love. “Must be incapable of love,” she incants over and over, using different examples behind her reasoning for using such a strongly suggestive phrase. “Never had a broken heart / Never seen me fall apart,” as if taunting the chasms stuffed full of songs about love that only would have grown out of a broken heart. The song is equal parts empowering and bewildering, leaving the listener to guess whether her cries are vulnerable or sarcastic.

Murphy fans may be quick to label them sarcastic; listen once more to the certainty in her voice when she shouts, “I’m incapable!” She’s heading into another hook but she leaves a couple measures for the listener to recollect: she’s dejected, feeling distant and disconnected from others. Sad disco is still disco, and Róisín Murphy can capitalize on a feeling in her sleep. Just drink lots of water; this one’s a long dance break.
