"Emerald Rush" by Jon Hopkins

It seems fitting that I write about the exceptional Jon Hopkins, as I jet through the sky on a Dreamliner toward his London roots. In two short weeks, I’ll be heading Hopkins direction once more, only this time, stateside -- Indio to be exact. Coachella 2019 will be Jon’s second appearance at the celebrity-laden desert spectacle, and considering Jon’s house-forward interpretation of his body of work during a 2015 performance on the Yuma stage, fest-goers are in for a remarkable experience with his most recent, labor-intensive and Grammy-nominated album, Singularity, primed at the forefront.
Jon is an artist who pushes sonic boundaries through an immense curiosity of the human experience. He strives for higher states of consciousness by practicing transcendental meditation and with Singularity, took psychedelics as an instrument to influence and inspire the music. Hopkins began as a classically-trained pianist, transitioning to keyboard for Imogen Heap, then solo work, then collaborations such as film scoring for Peter Jackson and production for Coldplay. The man does it all.
Over time, his music has evolved from melodic piano to bass-heavy electronic music that has a unique, fractured techno sound of its own. “Emerald Rush” is an elevated, compositional masterpiece, but if I could crudely analogize it, I’d probably describe it as a collaboration between aliens and transformers, produced by The Glitch Mob. And I mean that in the best way possible. Simply put, Hopkins makes tracks that do not subscribe to genre or the typical duration of a song, and albums meant to be inhabited as a universe of their own. I am thoroughly excited to be captivated by his Coachella performance from start to finish.
