"Leave My Home" by FKJ
Curated by: Amanda Scharkss
Spotify: bit.ly/LeaveMyHomefkj
Genre: #electrosoul
French Kiwi Juice. Vincent Fenton’s stage name alone is so refreshing, you can almost hear the ice crackling as you pour yourself a tall glass. I remember a few years ago when I actually struggled to find friends who would accompany me to witness this human embodiment of pure greatness. These days, I think it’s safe to say that, at the very least within our little niche, everybody knows about FKJ. As for the rest of the world, that “Tadow” video with Masego has nearly 120 million views on Youtube.
We’ve seen it once, we’ve seen it dozens of times -- when an artist reaches a level of recognition that they more than deserve, it’s a pivotal moment. Either the artist leans into their own and somehow bests their earlier content, or they ride that wave of recognition into the mainstream. It’s absolutely no surprise that FKJ falls into the former. With his latest release, “Leave My Home,” I find myself floating towards cloud 10 at the first note. For about 20 seconds, we get that distinct spool of vocal sampling he’s been threading into his music from the start. Then, if that’s only what we can hear from the outside, FKJ swiftly opens the door and lets some of the cleanest production I’ve heard to date flood the room.
Like the sunlight when it hits the water just right, the glittery guitar notes glide alongside the plucks and percussions that lap at the edge of FKJ’s voice. And that perfectly timed breakdown? I’m rendered wordless. He talks about leaving his home, but rather than focus on any nerves one might feel, he points his lyrics towards the notion of the world waiting on him to change it all for the better. As if his talent wasn’t inspiration enough. Undoubtedly so, wherever he goes, FKJ will be sailing as smoothly as this song.
