Born in New Orleans on November 20, 1941, the jive-talkin', psychedelic godfather started performing in Crescent City clubs as a youngster and was inspired by fellow New Orleanian Professor Longhair, whom he met at age 13. He went on to win six Grammy's and in 2011 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Ever wondered where the music festival Bonnaroo got its name? They borrowed it from Dr. John's 197 album Desitively Bonnaroo. You can betcha bottom dollar that there are gonna be a million and one tributes to the music legend next weekend in Tennessee. Wish I could be there.
There are some artists who are household names in many parts of the world. Then there are some who never quite seemed to penetrate the minds of the casual music listener. Dr. John teeters on being one of those and it's a damn shame. Do yourself a favor and listen to "Iko Iko" today...and then do your ears and soul a favor and dig into the rest of his incredible catalogue.
