"Old Bone (Jim-E Stack remix)" by Wet

Genre: #indie

It’s a beautiful thing when a song can transport you somewhere else, whether it’s to a past relationship, a distant memory, a particular hope for the future, wherever. When I listened to this song for the first time, I shut my eyes and found myself in a place new and unknown; yet still a sense of familiarity overcame me. I was here before, laying in a sunny, open field, but now I’m weaving my way through a dark, overgrown forest. Someone is whispering my own thoughts back at me and even though I recognize the words, the meaning is totally different. I open my eyes again -- this couldn’t be the same song.

In my opinion, Jim-E Stack’s remix of “Old Bone” by indie trio Wet is everything a remix should strive to be. It takes the original (a stunningly beautiful song on its own already), extracts its key features (in this case, the words), and highlights them against a totally different backdrop of textures and timbres to give the song new life. With lyrics kept true, the light piano accents and eloquent finger-picked guitar of the folksy original are replaced with cool synths and a gentle yet pulsing backbeat. The pitched-down vocoded voice still tells a story about unconditional yet unreciprocated commitment, but in this way the rather light-hearted, stream-of-consciousness delivery from Wet’s lead singer Kelly Zutrau is turned into something more intentional and somber.

A few (hundred) listens later, and each time without fail I’m transported somewhere different. From regrets of a lost opportunity to thoughts of a struggling friend to reminders about the fragility of life, I listen each time humbled by the power a single song can hold over me.
