It doesn’t take much to recognize how saturated, convoluted, shallow, and sub-par the music scene can often be in this day and age. Even the biggest and brightest of minds fall into the same old trappings of the industry - producing radio ready hits that give you perfect manufactured blend of euphoria, melancholy, or intrigue only to leave you feeling empty in the end. This is all made more dire by the absolutely massive amount of records that exist today - making it even more difficult to stand out. So what is one to do? Making your fans eat an entire raw onion for some of your merch…well that could be a start.
Part genre-bending tastemakers, part multi-sensory musical pioneers - Memba have been thrust into greatness, particularly in the last year or two. Based out of New York and consisting of producers Ishaan Chaudhary & Will Curry, the group has been on the rise since the release of their first official single in 2016. However, it was with the inception of their first tried and true EP, “SAGA-1,” and the subsequent immersive launch party that they truly showed their creative wizardry. Held in Brooklyn, the two planned for over a year to bring their music to life through actors, contortionists and interactive installations. They used smell to connect listeners with each track - offering vials of different scents that were paired to their musical counterparts, and perhaps even more compelling - they offered their fans savage challenges for merch - like consuming stinky raw vegetables on the spot.
But here we are, almost two years and a handful of more releases later (including the release of follow-up EP “SAGA-II on ODESZA’s Foreign Family Collective) and Memba has build their following on a lot more than gimmick alone. Case in point being their single “Vexed,” with collaborators WiDE AWAKE and XO Man. Heavy, tribal, and compelling, Vexed is a masterwork in immersive music. It kicks off like the opening to trailer for an action movie and quickly builds into something absolutely maddening. As the build up rises, XO Man chimes in with “Rude boy, kill em wid da,” and gives way to death by tribal stuttered trap drums. Harking back to some of the better years of trap music, but with a modern heavy future bass influence, it is massively compelling.
Memba teamed up with London producers WiDE AWAKE on this track in apparently one studio session, citing that they both somehow had the same song on their hard drive, same synth pattern, same tempo, and same beat and all it took was one sitting to complete the piece. You can feel the love on this track, both in the atmospherics, and the homemade sampling and sounds that are pervasive throughout, keeping the tune from becoming cookie-cutter and generic. Perfect for hype up playlists, but diverse enough to not be “just another banger,” Memba proves with “Vexed” that while off-the-wall unique experiences can build a fan base, high quality, compelling music is what keeps people coming back for more.
