Even the simplest of serendipities can brighten my mood for the rest of the day. I’m currently sitting here at a coffee shop like any cliche freelancer, self-resentment easing its way to the forefront of my mind as I realize that, once again, I unknowingly left my headphones powered on for the past week. Whomp. While I’m sifting through my mental musical cache for “Song 32” by Noname, the lofi beat from my mind suddenly starts playing on the speaker at the coffee shop.
No, I’m not able to listen on repeat before I write, but it’s as awesome a sign as any that this post must be written right here, right now.
Born and based in Chicago, Fatimah Warner is an artist that caught my attention immediately. Because, at the end of the day, an artist’s and/or song’s title doesn’t have to matter—it’s the content which lies within (profoundness intended).
Presumably as desired, I’m solely tuned in to the lyrics. Having started out in slam poetry, Noname has crafted “Song 32” into one giant, satirical metaphor with the stunning cadence of a haiku. She comments that artists are willing to exchange their talent for fame. She highlights the irony of political figures and big corporations. She raises the point that America cares more about Cardi B’s engagement ring than Cardi’s music. No metaphor necessary, “America at its best” is “the pettiest that gets.”
Ultimately, though, I think this song is about celebrating that we’re all “humanly a hypocrite.” We love to call out others on their bullshit, but how often do we take the time to point that finger at ourselves? Just some food for thought as Noname geniusly ventures into her own self-criticism and, simultaneously, self-praise. Yippee-kay-yay motha f*****.
