"Mount Everest" by Labrinth

Genre: #electrosoul

Mondays at Rock With This are typically reserved for "transitional" songs. The ones that preserve the lazy Sunday mindset while providing ample energy to help ease us into the new week.

And then I watched last night's episode of HBO's Euphoria.

Without fanboying too hard, I haven't been this awestruck by a television show since Breaking Bad. Only two episodes in, they are delivering a storyline filled with exceptional writing, stunning visuals, and some of the the intensely raw shit I've ever seen.

This track, "Mount Everest" by Labrinth, played towards the end of the episode during a foreshadowing montage for what is certain to be more very dark moments. It captured the gravitas of the scene perfectly and it was one of those tracks that brought out my inner gangsta. I knew it had to be Monday's feature.

For those who aren't familiar with Labrinth, he is the "L" in the supergroup LSD featuring Sia (S) and Diplo (D). The trio bursted onto the scene and have seemed to fade just as abruptly. While the latter of the acronym are household names, British singer, songwriter, rapper and record producer Timothy Lee McKenzie is not...yet. At least not in the States.

The previous stuff of his that I listened to sounds like an edgier John Legend. But not "Mount Everest". This one sounds as if Aloe Blacc and Gary Clark Jr. spawned a devil-child who was fixin' to conquer the whole damn world.

Possessing godlike confidence while suggesting the 30,000 foot giant ain't got shit on him, I certainly will not dispute his claim. And as I listen, I'm similarly feeling like Mount Everest ain't got shit on me.
