"Love Letters to God" by Nahko And Medicine For The People

Being asked to recommend a favorite track can be a daunting task and even more so when your selection will be the auditory tour guide for a top-down drive around the island paradise that is Kauai. Add in that the requestor is none other than the founder of RWT and one of your best buds and well…the stakes are high. Never fear, Nahko to the rescue.
Joel Miguel Nahkohe-ese Parayno is from Portland, Oregon and he's a modern day Hippocrates prescribing musical remedies to soothe and nourish the soul. In “Love Letters To God”, Nahko and Medicine for the People have concocted an adaptogenic elixir that combines flowing horns and a chilled-out down tempo beat with lyrics that are intermittently uplifting and confronting. Affirmation of my innate perfection? Check. Low-key gender-check of God? Gotcha fam. Subtle references to the atrocities suffered by native people? In there.
So let’s talk about the elephant (or in this case the bear) in the room. The uniqueness of Nahko’s vocal styling is undeniable; whether that’s a positive or negative is open to interpretation but for me his crooning, warbling, slam-poet articulation is the perfect delivery mechanism. Listening to Nahko is like taking down a shot of wheatgrass - earthy and funky upon first inspection, sweet and smooth on the way down and afterwards I’m left with an newfound energy for the rest of the day or night and the sense that I did something good for myself. Powerful medicine.
“Love Letters To God” makes me feel human and more than human, connected to my sisters and brothers across the planet and part of the bigger story told by the stars. Staring up at a glowing, nearly-full moon from the roof of a beachside hotel, with my amazing wife’s hand in mine while the waves lap loudly on the shore below, it’s easy to think God must be reading at least a few of our letters.
