"Climb to Safety (written by Jerry Joseph)" by Widespread Panic
Curated by: Jared Paul
Spotify: bit.ly/ClimbtoSafetyWidespreadPanic
Genre: #jamband
"You can hear it coming / Like train out of control / Surely leaves you wondering / Exactly where your ticket goes"
My ticket is bought and I know exactly where I'm goin'. Tomorrow in the wee hours of the morn, I take a deep dive down memory lane and head to Colorado -- DESTINATION RED ROCKS -- to see a band that I've spent over 150 nights of my life with. A band, a community, and a movement that helped etch the man I am today.
"Screamed the conductor / He's been dead for 20 years / Hear the other people clapping / As he grinds through every gear"
Growing up in Atlanta, WSP was our Kings of the South. Most weekends my friends and I would hop in a car and road trip to wherever they were playing. Their albums "Everyday" and "Til the Medicine Takes" (which "Climb to Safety" is off of) were my bibles. WSP was a way of life. And then in 2002, everything changed. Their founding guitarist Mikey Houser passed away. His death absolutely gutted me. And they just never sounded the same.
"After all that I been through you're the only one that matters / You never left me here in the dark here on my own / I can feel your water rising over / Let me be you ladder baby / I promise you'll be dry never be alone"
It's been five years since I've seen the boys. The last time in my current hometown at the Fox Theater in Oakland, CA. As I embark on some major life journeys...taking the next step with my wife to have a baby, moving to Austin, TX, and going all-in on Rock With This, I think it's time to make peace with the past. It's time to celebrate with my best buds who never stopped loving the band. It's time, even if just for a weekend, to rejoin the movement.
Red Rocks is their holiest of grails. I was there for their very first run there and they own the record for the most consecutive sold out shows at the venue. I'm ready to go back; to once again bask in their light.
Long live Widespread Motherfuckin' Panic!
