Breathing with excessive use of the chest, neck, and shoulder muscles is common and not good. Iโve made many other videos on this topic.
-
What is equally not good is getting a ton of belly distention during inhalation with ZERO expansion of the rib cage.
-
A good inhalation is characterized by using the diaphragm (main breathing muscle) to inflate the lungs.
-
As the diaphragm contracts it moves down and distends the belly. Eventually as the lungs approach their capacity ๐ซ and fill up with air they volumize and the rib cage expands 360 degrees like a cylinder thatโs expanding in all directions.
-
Some people have rib cages that are very tight and restricted and thatโs who this drill is for.
-
For my online clients who I have do thisโฆI have them do a few rounds of this FOLLOWED by full diaphragmatic breaths without the pillow in constructive rest position (laying on their back).
-
Think of the rib cage expansion breathing as a way to stretch your rib cage with air.
-
Have you ever done a breathing drill like this? #shorts
