After having played the most recent Resident Evil title I yearned to go back and play the older games in the franchise. My all time favorite RE game will forever be the Gamecube remake of the first title. This introduced me to the world of survival horror and the Resident Evil mythos. I remember playing this late at night with the lights off just like the magazines had suggested.
It still stands the test of time and is also the best remake ever made in my opinion. It feels brand new while keeping the old gameplay style in tact while adding a lot of improvements like better graphics, new cutscenes and story bits, new enemies, weapons and more.
The pre rendered backgrounds still look fantastic and playing at 4K is an absolute blast. The game actually has a lot of things that change depending on your play style or certain things that you do. Cutscenes get altered or characters will perish and not play a part in later story bits. The game was truly ahead of its time and still feels more ambitious than some triple A titles that come out today.
I do think a first person remake of Resident Evil can work, but I do not think this game will ever be dethroned as my personal favorite.
