Remote ID FRIA and Compliance
This video, filmed in February 2023, will discuss the current state of the FAA's Remote ID (identification) program for small unmanned air vehicles, i.e. drones and RC model aircraft.
I will present a remote ID overview, and the state of drone manufacturer compliance with the remote ID rules from the FAA. As of Feb 2023, there are around 100 drones that are remote ID compliant.
I will then cover important dates for the RC pilot. The main date we should all be aware of is September 16, 2023 when all drones and RC model aircraft need to have a working remote ID system when flying, with the exception of this models flying in an FAA Recognized Identification Area (FRIA) or those models which are less then 250 grams. These smaller models do not need to be registered nor comply with remote ID requirements.
I will also cover the www.FAA.gov website where they discuss remote ID compliance issues, a discussion of FRIA, and where you can see the locations of FRIAs in the US. Community Based Organizations will have a central role with FRIA establishment.
I will conclude with some thoughts of remote ID and where the FAA is headed, and how this affects hobby modeler pilots of drones and RC aircraft.
