Remote ID FAA Update Sept 2, 2023
Video filmed on Sept 2, 2023. Remote ID FAA update as of Sept 2, 2023.
There is a lot of discussion on the FAA's new remote identification (remote ID) program for all RC model aircraft that will become effective on Sept 16, 2023. After Sept 16, if you are a recreational RC pilot flying a drone, fixed or rotary wing model aircraft you need to comply with the remote ID ruling. A remote ID system must either be installed in the factory (standard remote ID or via a remote ID module. If you AMA club field is granted a FRIA (FAA Recognized Identification Area), you do not need any remote ID electronics to legally fly as a recreational pilot.
I wrote the FAA's UAS Support Center asking if there would be any relief on this important start date for remote ID. The center got right back to me. The FAA representative said they are aware of delays with remote ID modules and FRIA approvals and will have more to share with us as we get closer to the Sept 16, 2023 compliance date.
