On May 17, 2024. The Waukesha County Communications Center received a report of a retail theft that occurred at Dicks Sporting Goods. The caller advised that the suspects stole approximately $1000 worth of goods and fled in a white Chevy sedan and provided the license plate number. Shortly later, officers with the New Berlin and Brookfield Police Departments located the suspected vehicle driving at a high rate of speed. When the officers activated their emergency lights, the vehicle continued to accelerate fleeing at speeds over 100 MPH. Another officer attempted to deploy spike strips which was unsuccessful, causing the pursuing officer to come to a complete stop. After the suspect ran multiple red lights and drove recklessly near pedestrians, the officer decided to terminate the pursuit which lasted approximately 3 miles. Shortly after terminating the pursuit, a deputy from the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department witnessed the suspect vehicle crash into a sign at a Starbuck drive through and was able to detain the driver and passenger. Officers from the New Berlin Police Department were informed by a citizen that someone had thrown an object out of the fleeing vehicle and located a brick like object wrapped in cloth and tape. The officers unwrapped the item and found it was indeed just a brick. Deputies were able to identify the driver of the vehicle as Darrell and the passenger as Savanna. Both were transported to the Brookfield Police Department where Darrell admitted to seeing the officers behind him and attempting to flee. The driver Darrell was found guilty for 1st Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety, 2nd Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety, and Vehicle Operator Flee/Elude Officer. He was sentenced to 6.5 years in prison, 11 years of extended supervision, ordered to complete 50 hours of community service and pay $1036 in fines. The passenger Savanna was charged with Felony Retail Theft and currently has an active warrant as she failed to appear in court.
