On March 30, 2024. An officer from the Wausau Police Department saw a silver Ford Taurus traveling at a high rate of speed. As the officer attempted to catch up to the vehicle, the driver accelerated and began fleeing. The pursuit was terminated after .7 miles. After the termination of the pursuit, dispatch advised that there was a vehicle roll over accident that had just occurred in the area (this was 2 minutes and 16 seconds after and 2. 3 miles from the termination of the pursuit on the same street and in the same direction in which the fleeing vehicle was last seen traveling). Using a pace calculator it is estimated that the vehicle would have been traveling an estimated 60. 88 miles per hour in order to travel that distance in that amount of time. Officers responded to the crash location and located the silver Ford Taurus crashed and on its roof. Nobody was located inside and a K9 was called to locate the driver which was unsuccessful. Officers made contact with a resident of a home nearby who advised that she did not see anything but heard the accident happen. She then advised that her mailbox was missing and possibly stuck by the crashed vehicle. It was later documented that the vehicle did in fact strike the mailbox belonging to the residence. The vehicle's registration came back to a woman named Shelley and officers believed that her 17 year old son “Mikhi” was the driver. About an hour later, dispatch received a call from Shelly's phone advising Mikhi was leaving her residence in a white sport utility vehicle. Officers located the vehicle and conducted a high risk stop. All of the occupants of the vehicle were ordered to exit with their hands up. Everyone that was in the suspect vehicle was detained in handcuffs while officers proceeded with their investigation. Mikhi stated that he took his moms car keys when she was asleep. He knew the police were behind him and that he was speeding. He said he lost control of the vehicle and crashed and said seeing the red and blues and it scared him. Mikhi was checked out by EMS and said that he did not want to go to the hospital. He was transported to jail and released to correctional staff without incident. Mikhi was found guilty for Resisting/Failing to Stop, Criminal Damage to Property, and Disorderly Conduct. He was sentenced to a year and a half in jail and ordered to pay over $1000 in fines. All other occupants of the vehicle were released without any charges.
