On January 1, 2025 around 2:30 A.M. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department was advised of a wrong way driver traveling south in the northbound lane. While searching the location, a deputy spotted a white pickup truck driving on the wrong side of the road. The truck nearly struck another vehicle and the deputy crossed over onto the wrong side of the road himself in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop. The driver (Andrew) then accelerated and began to flee at speeds over 100 MPH. Andrew stayed on the wrong side of the highway, occasionally veering into other lanes and almost striking a few more vehicles. Another deputy attempted to deploy spike strips but was unsuccessful. Andrew pulled onto a dead end road and entered a cornfield where he got pitted against a tree and got stuck. Deputies exited their squads and ordered Andrew out of the truck. He was noncompliant and a deputy deployed his taser. Andrew grabbed the cords and pulled the probes out of himself. Deputies ripped Andrew out of his truck and secured him in handcuffs. EMS was called but when they arrived, Andrew refused to talk with them. He was read his Miranda rights and refused to submit to field sobriety tests. Andrew stated that someone told him to flee from the police and that the person said they would harm his family if he didn't listen. A warrant was obtained, and he was transported to the hospital for a blood draw. While at the hospital, Andrew became very agitated and deputies decided to handcuff him to the bed for the safety of hospital staff. After the blood draw, Andrew was taken to the Jefferson County Jail and charged with Fleeing and Eluding, Recklessly Endangering Safety, Obstructing an Officer, Criminal Damage to Property, Reckless Driving, OWI (5th or 6th), Hit and Run-Property Adjacent to Highway, Unreasonable and Imprudent Speed, Driving Wrong Way on Divided Highway, Fail/Stop at Stop Sign, Refuse to Take Test for Intoxication After Arrest, and Felony Bail Jumping. The case is still pending in court and Andrew is currently in prison waiting to be sentenced.
