On October 23, 2025. Deputies from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department were notified by the Sparta Police Department that a stolen Chevrolet Malibu was traveling in their direction. Sparta officers advised that the vehicle was a rental car and stated they were receiving GPS updates from the vehicle’s tracking system.
Shortly later, a deputy located the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver (Nicholas) failed to pull over and accelerated to speeds over 100 MPH. While fleeing, Nicholas ran multiple stop signs and drove on the wrong side of the road.
Eventually, the vehicle began to slow down and came to a stop. Deputies exited their squads and conducted a high-risk traffic stop. The driver and passenger were both ordered to exit the vehicle and complied. Both were searched and secured in handcuffs before being placed into a squad car. While searching Nicholas, deputies located a small amount of marijuana. The rental vehicle did not appear to have been damaged at all during the pursuit. Nicholas stated his son had rented the vehicle and mentioned that he had a suspended license which he didn’t want to get in trouble for.
Nicholas was found guilty for Vehicle Operator Fleeing or Eluding an Officer, Drive or Operate a Vehicle without the owners Consent, 2nd-Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety, and Possession of THC. He was sentenced to 4 years in prison and 8 years of extended supervision. The passenger was later released without any charges.
