Finally, mastaba shows up on this channel! He's one of my favorite people to have in a game, and a really solid player to boot. He begins with a bang here, too!
This game was decided on turn 2, more or less. When going late in the first auction, teokop is fond of buying the 08 but not buying any coal or building. Personally i'm not a fan of that play - might as well buy 06 for that since it's a cheaper plant, and the early money from 08 is huge. This game shows one of the major downsides to the 08 no-build start: even if a good plant falls to you, you won't have the money to properly bid someone on it. Thus mastaba landed the 27 without a fight, and the market stalled hard after that.
Even though we did a good job blocking mastaba's early builds, it didn't matter. The market threw almost every possible bad plant at us after 27, to the point that i willingly paid $35 for Plant 18 and do not regret it one bit.
At least i handled the late game better than i did in some of the other 4+ player games on here, going for an efficient 4-capacity plant instead of hoping for 31 or overpaying for 25/26. Would've saved money going for a 7-capacity plant instead of 39, but letting mastaba have 39 cheap would've resigned us to the same fate anyway. The game got mildly interesting when mastaba was caught without coal for 31, but he had such a huge lead he could replace 31 and still beat me by $30 at the end. That's what a big green plant on turn 2 will do for you, kids!
Actually feel good about how close i came in the end, though i still have a tough time judging when to go for 18 cities. Here i didn't get a great early-mid plant for cheap, nor did my builds go the greatest (what with the mega-jump into the west coast), nor was Step 3 going to drag on forever...and you need at least one of those things to plan for 18. Just happy i got 2nd place here, honestly!
