Though it may not be obvious at first, this is another themed team, but not in aesthetics or design inspiration, but on strategy. You see, most of this team is about lowering the opponent’s Speed, or Pokémon that benefit from it in some way. It began when I suddenly found a shiny Spidops in the wild and decided to see if I could devise a team based on this Pokémon. With moves like Silk Trap, String Shot, and Sticky Web, and stats like a wall (albeit limited to early-game Bug Pokémon stats) this Pokémon seems fine-tuned to manipulate who goes first.

The team is my least successful one this generation though: lowering Speed is easily countered through things like Trick Room, Pokémon who are already very slow to begin with, andPokémon with Speed Boost. A powerful, slow Restricted Pokémon, like Ice Rider Calyrex, is near impossible to overcome. In addition, Pokémon with high Speed who are given further Speed boosts, like Flutter Mane with a Booster Energy or Miraidon with Choice Scarf, are problematic due to needing many Speed drops to act ahead of them.

The Spidops Team’s playlist is as such:

Because this team is focused around stacking Speed drops for the opponent, there were a lot of Effort Point schemes revolving around 252 HP, 252 Attack or Sp. Atk, and 4 to Defense or Sp. Def. This could complicate things as it might require additional Speed drops to go first, but these Pokémon need the durability boost to withstand those initial hits in the first place. Because of the overarching strategy and relative newness of this team, there have been very few changes done since it debuted.

I had not realized until going through this description that I had neglected to do Hyper Training for Spidops, still having the IVs he had when caught. This is the sort of error that won’t be happening in Pokémon Champions, as they’ll do away with IVs altogether and treat all Pokémon as if they have perfect IVs in every stat.

The plan for Upper Hand, perhaps the most unexpected move on Poliwrath, is that one other counter to reduced Speed is the priority attack. However, this can be very hard to predict, and opponents don’t usually bring them out until they see a lot of Speed drops or my Pokémon already have low HP, and even then, they might not try it. Though Upper Hand worked in the battle in this video and made dead weight out of the opponent’s Chien-Pao, more often than not, it doesn’t, and they just stick with regular priority moves.

For the record, both Amped and Low Key Toxtricity can have Technician as a Hidden Ability, and they both have the same stats and access to these four moves. I just chose Amped purely for visual reasons. The Nature I needed, Modest, would be classified under Low Key Form, so I used a Mint to make Toxtricity’s stats like that of a Modest-Natured one.

Because of the more defensive EV schemes of most of these team members, sometimes, Pollen Puff is necessary to use to heal Dipplin’s teammates. Dipplin’s physical Attack is not so great, but Sucker Punch has since come in handy for fighting Pokémon with Focus Sash and getting the knockout hit on Shadow Rider Calyrex. Previously occupying that slot was Tera Blast, but it proved impractical with the lack of Pokémon weak to Fire Dipplin would face compared to my other Grass-types with Tera Fire, like Toedscruel.
