There are currently only two locations used as backdrops for this game: the Battle Arena (used for Ranked and Online Competitions) and the Gym Court (used for Casual and tutorials). I hope they add more as time goes on, and I expect a major content update scheduled for the end of the season (May 13th). I don’t expect anything, but looking at interviews and such, they have a lot of ambition for this game, and at minimum, their deadline would likely be the World Championships. I complained about this for Scarlet and Violet, which had a lot of unused battle courts, and nothing ever changed on that regard.
I kind of miss how Pokémon Battle Revolution had 11 colosseums, each looking wildly different from each other, from the Magma Colosseum set in an industrial area on the top of a volcano, to the Neon Colosseum, set in a casino’s lounge in an urban area, to the Lagoon Colosseum, set on a tropical island off the coast.

This does not look like the sort of team you can get through the Roster Ranch, so when I saw Gliscor turn up at the start, I knew I had to try to get rid of it before it uses Substitute and Poison Heal to just outlast everything. Somehow, Swords Dance, the move it used instead, just feels scarier, especially as Skarmory used Tailwind. I knew I made the right choice giving Paolo (Quaquaval) Aqua Jet! The solution to Tailwind is either Trick Room, priority moves, or Tailwind of your own, which most of my Scarlet and Violet double battle teams had (usually two or more).
That was an interesting Archaludon, adapted for harsh sunlight rather than rain, like I’m used to seeing.

Here is a Casual Battle. One way to determine that is its location, the Gym Court belonging to Cordy, whom he lets other people use because he intends to retire. It is a far more humble location than the Battle Arena, but battles here are no less intense.
There are three Pokémon available based on frogs and toads, and my opponent began with two of them. I figured they were expecting a Grass attack on Politoed, so I focused on Bellibolt instead. Also, Electromorphosis can be a lot of trouble. Things kind of broke down for my opponent after that, it seems, and it kind of lacks any rain synergy as well. Instead, I was able to benefit from the rain through it increasing the damage for Water-type attacks.

One helpful convention in this game: if you’re up against someone playing another language, un-nicknamed Pokémon will be translated into your language’s names. A pretty scary player here, they’ve gone on a 3-win streak, and while my Pokémon team is out of the ordinary in the Pokémon used, I proved that I would put up no less of a fight than someone packing Incineroar, Sinistcha, Archaludon, and such, even if their team has some less-seen picks as well (and the two most commonly seen Pokémon on their team, Charizard and Whimsicott, were not selected).
Also, it is quite a frustrating experience to land a strong attack, only to see the opponent make it through with a sliver of HP without needing a Choice Scarf. Of course, I can understand that frustration when it happens with my own Pokémon too. Even more frustrating when that Pokémon is slow but gets the 10% chance of Quick Claw activating later on, meaning you knew you could stop it 90% of the time while knowing you yourself can't rely on that strategy.
