I didn’t have much time to write a good description, so here is the first hour or so of Pokémon Champions, albeit edited to fast-forward through the legal stuff. I always read the terms and conditions so I’m not caught off guard when something turns up based on the company’s actions, but I know that is by far the most boring part of playing this game. (No arbitration clause this time. I also checked to see if there was any prohibition against putting up footage of this game like you see here right now, but there didn’t seem to be any.) I’ve also edited out some parts of purchasing the 12-month membership for privacy reasons.

Aside from that though, this video takes us through the introduction to Pokémon Champions and its original characters. The music for Kitt’s ranch is vaguely based on the early routes’ theme from Pokémon Black and White, while Kitt herself seems to be an older version of the Pokémon Breeder trainer character from Pokémon Sun and Moon, and the framing device seems to be taking over for Cordy’s Gym, as he plans to retire.

His granddaughter, Totara, is the receptionist and handles bringing you over to the Pokemon Arena for Ranked or to the battle court in the back of the building for Casual Battles. The remaining two characters are Caraway, the owner of the Battle Arena; and Kajima, the mayor of the city of Frontier, where this game takes place. I’m not entirely sure what the roles are for Caraway and Kajima aside from looking fancy in the opening cutscene. It’s not like there’s a big single-player mode where you face them and other big name trainers in the area.

We have a live battle against an online opponent as part of the tutorial! At least, that’s what it looks like to me. That was a surprise, and I can’t imagine it was too pleasant of an experience if you were up against someone who either got lucky with Cordy’s random teams or had strong fundamentals and could work with what was available.

That being said, after a certain point, it’s really just a lot of navigating menus. Aside from the introductory battle and that one online one to take you from Beginner to Poké Ball Tier, there won’t be any other battles in this video.

I might put up a couple of the first Ranked battles I played though, using a team I made myself, making it the debut of the first team, the Aurorus Team, plus footage of the remaining tutorials and maybe sending Pokémon over to Kitt’s Ranch from Pokémon HOME, to clear up any confusion anyone might have.
