The core reason for this team is simple: I just wanted to headline a team with a Generation I Pokémon. While Exeggutor and Raichu headlined teams for Pokémon Sword and Shield, they were both the Alolan regional forms. Hitmonchan has no regional forms, no Mega Evolutions, no Gigantamax form, not even any signature moves given after Generation I. Hitmonchan is just…there in the grand scheme of things.
By now, regulation rules had allows two Restricted Pokémon per team, meaning single battles could result in my opponent having up to two-thirds Restricted Pokémon. As a result, many of the Pokémon on this team were designed specifically to deal with opponents far stronger than them.

Though not a Restricted Pokémon, Flutter Mane continues to be a big problem without a way to fight it specifically due to so little being able to outrun it, being so tough from the special-attacker side, and having so few weaknesses and a bunch of immunities. Hitmonchan was trained to fight Flutter Mane, being able to launch strong super-effective Bullet Punch attacks while being able to withstand even super-effective Moonblast attacks (I think actually two of them, but an Earthquake followed by Bullet Punch will usually do). Sometimes I forget, but one Bullet Punch is usually not enough to knock it out. What’s needed is an Earthquake attack to bring it within range, followed by Bullet Punch. The opponent will get wise and switch out if I use Bullet Punch too soon.
Delphox’s Tera type was originally Fairy, but I found that the most common threatening type was Ghost, not Dark, so I changed it to Dark later on. While I have to be careful around Flutter Mane, this does make fighting Dragapult, Ceruledge, and Shadow Rider Calyrex much easier, especially after a Flame Charge.
Kingdra is the Pokémon I use on this team if the opponent is focused on barriers or defense boosts, as his strategy is about critical hits, which ignore both. It increases the damage by x2.25, which is a step down from the x3 from when it was first introduced, but it is enough that a critical hit attack from Kingdra will give even Blissey trouble. If allowed to fully set up, Kingdra can threaten the opponent’s entire team. This is why Yawn is necessary: to buy time, either from the turns wasted through Sleep or switching out.
Due to Stone Axe laying Stealth Rock, Kleavor is the most common opening Pokémon on this team. And due to entry hazards not being nearly as common as they would be on Pokémon Showdown, most opponents do not have a way to dispel them, like with Rapid Spin or Defog.
Trevenant uses the “Sub-Seed” strategy, where it uses Leech Seed and Substitute. This is not nearly as popular as it used to be though, as it can be dispelled as easily as switching out, and the Pokémon needs to withstand at least two hits with enough HP left to deploy Substitute. This works if the opponent s focused on stat boosts and other status moves, but most players online will go straight for the attack, especially with Restricted Pokémon, making a strategy like Sub-Seed exceptionally difficult to execute.
