...One of the citrus lime trees lime trees in the garden succumbed to a disease & I liked the twisted trunk & thought it might be suitable for another crooked stick fire. So with a bit of fettling I made myself a new "fire wand," or fire brace actually as it works on exactly the same principle as a brace & bit drill.

...This one was bigger than my last one & moved in a larger circle, which actually made it harder work, but once I got into the rhythm it didn't take too long to coax an ember. There must be a sweet spot for this & I'm guessing it lies in something between the old one & this new one.

...With this technique you have to substitute speed for pressure so a crutch style bearing block is required to get the extra pressure required & it's surprising how much pressure it takes.

...I see this more as a novelty firelighting method really & I wouldn't even consider it as a practical firelighting technique out in the field. That being said it's still a viable way of making a fire & it's always good to challenge yourself & try different things.

...It's not something I expect everyone to run out & try there's a few guys I know out there who are more than capable of doing this & I'd love to see them spinning up an ember with a wonky stick.
