...I've used my nodule of pyrite many times, with different types of fungus to light fires but I realised I've never actually taken it out in the field & used it like our ancestors would of so off to find a cave & collect some tinder on the way..

...There's actually quite a few cave options on top of the mountain. It's actually classed as a rock outcrop & covers a huge area with ravines & rock overhangs like this that have been used by the local monks for hundreds of years to shelter under.

...Once I found a good position I got set up & scraped some Berkley's polypore into a pile to catch the tiny sparks. Persistence is the key with this & every now & then you'll need to fluff up the tinder pile again as the pyrite will cover it with a dust that can make it harder for a spark to catch. Eventually a spark will land & catch a piece of fungus & with a bit of coaxing you'll soon have a fine ember to put in your tinder bundle.
