Restoring a Lesney Matchbox No. M2B Bedford Tractor & York Freightmaster Trailer, in the Major Pack range from 1961 until 1966.
Bedford replaced their S-Type truck with the TK in 1960 and Lesney followed suit with with M2 Major Pack. The M2A was the Bedford S-Type Walls Ice Cream Truck and in 1961 they replaced it with the Bedford TK-based M2B Bedford Tractor & York Freightmaster Trailer. It was a real step up on the older model with a plastic window piece in the cab and a much larger trailer which featured opening rear doors. This ran until 1966.
My model had been pretty well played with. The paintwork was expectedly scratched, the trailer was missing a wheel, the decals were mostly gone and so had the rear doors. I turned to Steve Flowers Model Supplies for replacements. All were good until it came to clear coating the decals. After being treated with Mr Hobby Topcoat, not for the first time the they started creasing. I ended up having to start over on the trailer body. For comparison, I chose some equivalents from Black Square Decals which are what you see on the trailer now.
While I've dived into the history of Bedford and the TK before, in this video I talk about the York Trailer Company which is so prominently displayed on the trailer model. I also talk about the Davies Tyre Company which is advertised on the trailer sides.
