Deadlifting 405lbs for off a 5.5" deficit with stiff legs. This lift is an interesting blend of things going on. My goal is to keep the hips high and keep the back mostly neutral, but I'm also not pretending that there isn't some mid/upper back rounding going on as I near the last few inches of the ROM. I'm also not shying away from it either...I kind of want it. I cue myself to keep the back tight mostly to make sure I maximize the hamstring stretch/engagement. I try not to bend the knees any further beyond the set position, both on the eccentric as well as the concentric as the pull is initiated.
I suppose the point of this is partly just because I can, but also because it's challenging, potent, doesn't require too many plates for a deadlift variation, doesn't seem to be as draining as a heavy 5 on a conventional deadlift would be, and probably does more to build mobility and end range strength as well.
I'd like to pull 500 this way, but that might be a bit lofty. Very confident I could do 450 right now, but 50more pounds is nothing to sneeze at. The biggest thing I have working in my favor in that regard is that i haven't done true deadlifts in years at this point, and almost all the posterior chain work I've been doing has been moderate weights for moderate reps.
So one thing I've started doing occasionally as of late is throwing the pull movement into my primary slot and putting the squat movement into the secondary slot (usually it's vice versa). That allows me to do things like heavy 1-5's on good morning and deadlift variations, and getting that heavy stimulus more often might allow me to cross the 500 barrier here. It's a goal for 2025! Wish me luck.
