The ballsiest choice a producer can make is launching a track with a sledgehammer beat out of the gate. The human ear is sensitive to rapid changes in tone and volume - this percussive onslaught had better be good, or it’ll piss off the listener and lose any chance at landing as an earworm. Fortunately, “Runnin’” was crafted in the experienced hands of Oscar de Jong, Mark Kneppers and Wim Plug, three Swedish DJs, EBBA winners and multi-faceted, genre-morphing collaborators.
The trio serve it up best in short interviews that can be found scattered across the web. They’re easygoing, a little gruff and believe they’re totally overrated. Cut to a clip of Wim Plug interviewed in his home amongst his sprawling record collection and he’s deprecating the group’s most recent release, adding that he does not consider himself an artist; he ostensibly gets more kicks from not using his degree at all than from actually playing live for adoring fans (Plug obtained a Masters in Social Geography).
Despite the group’s collective humility, they’re still booking festivals and selling out clubs around the world because they create the sickest bangers. While it barrels along at the same brisk 120 BPM throughout, “Runnin’” is a marathon tackled as a sprint that seems to change pace several times, sending the listener into a crazy forward lilt. In one section, the production is stripped until there’s nothing left but the beat, then it’s right back up the ladder and sirens are buzzing as a woman is in ecstasy detailing how someone’s got her runnin’. It’s like riding down a really, really long escalator into the subway when you know your train is pulling up - are you gonna make it? Better run.
