Lead singles bear the brunt of the weight of an audience’s expectations for an artist’s new album. Some artists go left-field, drawing from the meatier portions of their records for not-so-obvious leads: take Rihanna’s “Russian Roulette” from Rated R. Some artists go full blown in the other direction: Big K.R.I.T.’s “K.R.I.T. HERE” starts out the gates with an explosive celebration, ringing in his fourth LP, K.R.I.T. IZ HERE.
The song starts immediately with a pitched-up sample of The Winans’ “Trust In God” and that’s essentially what this song does. K.R.I.T. is expressing liberation from everything in the past: it’s just him, and he’s cool with it. On the artwork for the single, K.R.I.T. looks over someone in the distance as the sun sets - and he’s seated atop a tiny church, glowing from the inside. From the sample to the drumline to the chorus and the horns, “K.R.I.T. HERE” has anthemic gospel blood in its veins, something that clearly makes K.R.I.T. feel alive and well.
The music video vaults into a seriousness that depicts K.R.I.T. among a crowd of peers as text scrawls across the screen stating independence and an artistic pivot back to his country roots (he was born in Meridian, Mississippi). It sees him at a modern slave auction, selling for $100 or less after he was described as an “underrated, underground rapper” and a “lyricist,” prompting the buyer to ask for a lower price. K.R.I.T. pushes the envelope with imagery and sound for the purpose of commanding attention. His catalogue is well worth a plunder: in addition to his four LPs, he has thirteen EPs of material and two compilation albums.
