"The Keys" by Matt Duncan

Warm sun on my skin, hot sand beneath my feet and a beautiful mosaic of blue and greens far as the eye can see. Matt Duncan provides an escape from the grind and the Northern California rains with his jingle “The Keys”. It’s like an 80’s television show theme song filmed on a tropical island without the actual 80’s television show. It also brings me back to my childhood -- dancing with my folks to the sweet sounds of some classic Billy Joel. Duncan’s smooth vocals are frighteningly similar to that of the The Piano Man. Through and through, this is nostalgia at its finest.
Matt Duncan, a native of Lexington Kentucky is a classically trained instrumentalist and songwriter. A vocalist, pianist, guitarist, bassist, he does it all; and he actually does it almost all here writing, arranging, and recording “The Keys” with the only other accompaniment coming from violinist Anna Hess. Matt produced 3 albums between 2010 and 2015, however, none gained much traction. As a previous member of the Parlour Boys and Andrew English’s band Englishman, he’s attempted to find other pathways of work, but to no avail. So looks like we’re fortunately stuck with him.
“The Keys” is a vibrant, upbeat song about escaping the sorrows of a not-so-scintillating lifestyle. The track was released in 2013 and comes off his second album “Soft Times”. The album as a whole addresses experiences that resonate with those who have ever dealt with anxiety, failure and doubt -- but Matt is a brilliant and witty lyricist that creates an inspiring and optimistic spin. I like that approach to life. And if I lose it, I’m gonna move it, down to the Keys.
