"Paper Dreams" by Hudson Lee & Vorso

Dreams are tricky. What do they mean? Do they even mean anything in the first place? While I am surely able to write about the vividness of my dreams, and artists are able to draw, paint, or sketch theirs, I think the most impressive way to describe one’s dream is to synthesize it into sound.
Now let me introduce you to Hudson Lee, a mastermind from Winnipeg, Canada who created his own label (Upscale Recordings) and an additional artist-based collective, loftiimusic. Together with his good friend from across the pond, Tom Slattery (a.k.a Vorso), the two morphed “Paper Dreams,” into an extremely ethereal track. I reached out to simply ask how he and Vorso knew each other. Not only did Lee respond within the hour to answer my question (they’ve been friends for years), but also he volunteered his personal insight.
Lee drew his inspiration from a dream he had one night, in which he “saw a lot of colourful paper being torn up and transforming into flower petals.” Cue the cover art. Knowing this, the whole flow of the song follows a similar pattern to that of a dream: the slow fade in as surroundings begin to distort, the vivid confusion and yet understanding of the deep state, and the soft winding down as the in-and-out-edness of one’s mind begins to return to its wakeful reality.
It’s not quite a dub track, but if it is, it’s the most soothing dubstep I’ve heard. It’ll take a few listens to pick up on all of the confounding compilations that color this jagged lullaby. Vorso is apparently responsible for the “vibrant world percussive sounds and other little mystical, sparkly ear candy bits” that you hear. In my humble opinion, the texture of the song is as mystical and sparkly as any fantastical flower. The only way to know what that means? Listen.
