My favorite track from my favorite hip hop group coming out of the Pacific Northwest, 'North by Northwest' is a song of affirmation well suited in a time where many feel empowered and hopeless.
Calling out a culture that critiques rather than consoles, the entire thesis of Bayani Redux, their fourth full album, is a message of resilience and personal growth. Blue Scholars remained independent throughout their career. They became local legends infusing Seattle with their own form of socially conscious hip-hop. In a city struggling to maintain its identify as corporations begin to re-imagine it's horizon, 'North by Northwest' reminds the audience that there remains those true to the grind.
The tracks speaks of the challenges with remaining independent in a country driven by established industries. Written at a time where labels remained the gatekeepers for distribution, the story within the rhymes reminds of artists like Drake Dog (Andre Nikatina) who had to go so far as to change his stage name to free himself of the shackles of oppressive contracts.
The song reminds me of the importance of supporting artists and venues that promote local art. The scenes we cultivate are essential to a vibrant community.
