"Lady of the East" by Akal Dub

Aside from music, my passion is all over the place...and by that, I mean I love to see the world. I thoroughly relish experiencing new cultures, new art, new anything and everything. And, I’d like to think that most people who are passionate about music can feel me on this one, considering the influential net that music alone has globally cast across cultures since always. Nonetheless, I know for sure that a one Bradley Senstock, a.k.a Akal Dub, must be able to relate. Born in Japan and then moving every several years to a new spot, Akal Dub has dubbed his location on Soundcloud as “World, United States” - and you can feel it in his music.
Jumping in with Jumpsuit Records (shoutout to the man, the myth, the legend, Polish Ambassador), Akal Dub released his latest album Chrysalism at the end of 2018. Chrysalism obscurely means the tranquility one feels, for example, from listening to the rain on the roof during a thunderstorm and, although the various sounds are just that, understanding that those sounds are there for good reason. Upon giving a listen to the opening track, “Lady from the East,” it kinda does feel like I’m sitting inside listening to the rain, taking a spiritual journey. Shpongle vibes to the max.
With many a plunk on what sounds like a handpan, some seeping steam, and a fleeting flute, Akal Dub takes no time to get into the soul of the sojourn. Once you’re there, it’s a free for all. Birds chirping? That croaking frog instrument everyone wanted to play in elementary school music class? A rainstick? A lady (of the East, perhaps) gasping? But honestly, I find my mind shedding itself of the care to know. I’d rather just close my eyes, melt into the melody, and enjoy the chrysalism.
