"CHANCES (feat. Shay Lia)" by Kaytranada

KAYTRANADA, or Kaytranada if you’re using your inside voice, is a household sound. His primal grooves are all so sonically similar that they’re instantly tagged with the same artist’s signature, regardless if you’ve heard of the 26-year-old Haitian-Canadian producer, born Louis Kevin Celestin. His production list rolls long like Mike Williams’ credits, he grows in notoriety and prowess with each musical contribution, and his ubiquitous influence on hip hop and dance is already changing the relationship between the two genres.
“CHANCES” finds Kaytra spinning in comfortable territory with frequent collaborator Shay Lia - he has production credits on several of her songs, and she featured on the standout track “LEAVE ME ALONE” from his debut album 99.9%. Whereas that track found her commanding an ex-lover to release her and leave her alone, in “CHANCES” she’s gliding across the floor and basking in her own shine. “The stars truly / They want me to succeed,” and you kind of have to agree when you can feel them twinkling, blanketing the map on Rainbow Road.
The beat is slick like grape jelly with Kaytra’s signature fat drops of bass coordinating the rhythm like a rudder. Shay Lia’s delicate and sensual vocal beckons you to see this performed live at Coachella both weekends, on Sunday. His sound is deceptively immense; it fills up the room and will do infinitely more for a festival crowd (check out videos of his first Coachella appearance in 2017 for a preview). Get ready to dance your ass off and make sure to stretch those hip flexors after his set - trust me on that one.
