The hot, sweaty, humid summer is about to swing through in full-force with Sango’s “Fechado”, a rousing, Brazilian funk rhythm jam coordinated by Brazilian producer VHOOR. Bass booms through the trunk the whole way through the ride - not one moment offers relief from the relentless onslaught, much like a monsoon. The cover of Acima, the three-track EP collaboration between Sango and VHOOR, depicts a favela in Rio de Janeiro after what looks like a rainstorm; it strongly mirrors the steamy nature of “Fechado” and adds agitation just like the song, as the image is lo-res and slightly discolored.
Sango produced Smino’s “L.M.F.” off NØIR, his sophomore album release. He also touched “blckswn” and “Sorbet” in from Smino’s debut LP in 2017. He’s credited in production work for Tinashe, Christina Aguilera, Mick Jenkins and Bryson Tiller. His sound is primarily identified in strong funk rhythm patterns, but not often does the Seattle native sojourn to South America. This link-up shows his sharpened skills as an artist and a producer, and exposes VHOOR to a different audience.
Though I can’t speak Portuguese, the hooks throughout are incessantly on repeat, lodged in my brain. “Fechado” literally translates to “closed,” and that gives me plenty of room to work. The song has an infective beat that evokes strong feelings and increases its potential as an earworm. Enjoy “Fechado”, delicious Brazilian club music à la Seattle, Washington (more specifically Michigan, where Kai Asa Savon Wright/Sango is from). It won’t taste quite like anything you’ve tried, and it’s best followed up with a tequila shot.
