"Face the World" by Nipsey Hussle

Nipsey Hussle just was murdered, so this post is a tribute to a fallen legend. I haven’t listened to him for a few years, but I’m definitely going back through his catalog for the foreseeable future to remind myself why I connected with his music initially. Nipsey was one of the few MC’s who crafted music for the hood and the hip-hop heads. Few can bridge this gap, but Nipsey was able to through the wit in his lyrics and his connection to the streets, which garnered him a widespread fanbase. From what I’ve read about him today he was also known for his generosity in his community in the southern part of L.A. He was also in the midst of producing a documentary about the healer Dr. Sebi, which some claim was the reason he was killed.
Nipsey Hussle was a rapper who seemingly came up all by his lonesome, which is rare. Typically careers in the rap industry are built with collaborators in the form of producers or other rappers that help support their rise. Nipsey was an artist who was not shy about his background, having claimed Crenshaw since day one. He is an artist who was known for his street lyrics, but also the lyricism that was proven by his pen. I remembered that his debut album Victory Lap finally came out last year, but what I didn’t know was that it was nominated for a Grammy, which is fucking awesome.
“Face the World” was one of the first Nipsey Hussle songs that connected with me on a real level. The production is beautiful, and the lyrics are even more so. There’s life in these lines and you’ll hear it if you pay attention. I don’t really know what to say because this song speaks for itself. In my opinion this is his greatest work, but I frankly haven’t listened to enough of him. I never believed that he could top this track. Maybe he could have and maybe he did. Anyways, R.I.P. to Nipsey Hussle. His music lives.
