"Baby Tambourine" by KAASI

There’s a certain specific feeling I’m feeling, and it goes like this: my day at work was great, but not remarkable and most definitely not memorable, if not for being a Friday. I went home to make dinner and get ready to go out with my friends. Later, after three tequila shots at the bar, we step out onto the light-up dancefloor and the boomerang synth at the beginning of KAASI’s “Baby Tamborine” swings in over the smoke and lasers. It’s sticky wobble gives a little sweat and glisten to the incredibly consistent build through the course of this five-minute track.
Speaking of build, I’m not done speaking about this build. That boomerang pattern grabs you and pulls you right back to the beginning, no matter where you hear it in the song. Like the boomerang pattern, the rest of the track follows a pattern that is not easily (or at all, really) perceptible to the listener. It’s random, almost, and adds a manic nervousness, a creeping energy to the beat. The drums trip up and recede, ebbing and flowing like the tide.
When all fades away at the 2:36 mark and just a bright haze is audible, the beat pops back into the frame like it never left. The build continues (I know! Still? Yes!) as staccato synths pluck a panicked tune. But when even that fades and the deconstruction returns, when all fades away, not a haze but a delicate and determined piano loop - and the boomerang noise, boomerang-ing back into view. Just in time, too, as the piano loop drops its lower notes and wraps up quickly, suddenly gone. It’s not that KAASI makes jazz, but this feels more improvised than is typical. I’m all for the cross-pollination of jazz and, well, everything. The more the merrier.
