"If Love Is The Law" by Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds

When Oasis’ music isn’t doing the talking, we typically hear about the notorious Gallagher brother’s fucked up relationship and the heinous insults they throw at each other. Well, I’m doing to do my damndest to shift the narrative a bit, though it ain’t gonna be easy. Here goes...
Noel a.k.a “The Potato” according to his brother Liam, has for the last many years worked on his own project and released three albums as a free bird. It is abundantly clear that he doesn’t need Liam. Delivering a big blend of psychedelia, indie, and britpop, a wide spectrum of influences are covered and to peg his sound into one genre is tough. For a man with a career spanning almost three decades and credit behind some of the most singable tracks in rock history, it’s fair to expect him to know how to construct catchy tunes. And he doesn’t disappoint.
Fragility at it’s finest, “If Love Is The Law” goes into two separate directions, tearing you apart while leaving you in confusion what your next move will be. It pretty much sums up the passive aggressive saying “I’m fine” with it’s uplifting indie country melody and slight hint of Christmas, but has undertones of hidden sorrow and grief in the lyrics. Noel makes his confession on one single breath, but with no one there to listen and a void as vast as eternity. If that doesn’t entice, then a harmonica-solo by Johnny Marr might pique your interest.
Nostalgia might be easy in wishing for "Wonderwall" and "Champagne Supernova", but coming from someone born after the release of those two campfire zingers, I suggest you to keep an eye in the present as well. Because great things are happening, and I think that Noel himself best describes his gem: “it’s massive that song, massive”.
