I split my head down the middle and used a curl cream on one side only. Same wash, same gel, same amount, same styling on both sides.
Day one, the cream side already had a softer cast. That's the tradeoff. You get softness.
Day two is where they split. Frizz on one side, definition holding on the other.
Your gel probably isn't underperforming. It's being blocked by what you put underneath it.
