After the UK success of their medley, “Holliedaze” in 1981, the original Hollies – Allan Clarke, Graham Nash (who had left the band in 1968) , Tony Hicks and Bobby Elliott - came together to record an album. Both Terry Sylvester and Bernie Calvert left the group the same year. Paul Bliss had played keyboards with the Hollies in the late 70s and was with the band for the recording of the “What Goes Around” album. Paul was later a member of the Moody Blues. He had written Olivia Newton John’s US #3 charting, “Heart Attack” in 1982.
“What Goes Around” reached #90 on the US album chart; their first entry since “Another Night” in 1975. The album featured a revival of the Supremes’ “Stop In The Name Of Love”, which made it to #29 on the Hot-100; their first US Top-40 entry since “The Air That I Breath” in 1974. “Musical Pictures” was the b-side of “Stop In The Name Of Love” but was not on the album.
Both the album and 45 were the last time the Hollies registered on the US charts. It was different in the UK, where “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” went to #1 in 1988 and compilation albums charted almost up to this day.
Steve Kipner was born in Ohio but grew up in Brisbane, Australia. He became a songwriter of some note, penning “Physical” for Olivia Newton-John and “Hard Habit To Break” for Chicago, among many others. He had previously been a member of Tin Tin, with whom he had a worldwide hit with “Toast And Marmalade For Tea” in 1971.
